Were
originally to have been replaced in 1992, then to be retired in 2000
and 2003, but have now been extended to 2004 and 2006, respectively. Hull
systems: The
bridge is mounted to starboard of the permanent helicopter deck. Both
have repair facilities. Can carry 349 troops, including 14 officers,
or 470 troops for a short distance. The 120-m-long docking well, which
has a 14 × 5.5–m stern gate, can be submerged by 3 m. Movement of
the sluices and valves is automatic, using pumps (3,000 m3/hr)
controlled from a central position. A removable deck in six sections
covers 36 m of the after part of the well and allows the landing and
takeoff of heavy helicopters. A 90-m-long temporary deck in 15
sections can be used to stow cargo or vehicles, but its use reduces
the number of landing craft that can be carried. They can embark
either two EDIC landing craft for infantry and tanks, carrying 11
light tanks or trucks, or eight LCM(8) with tanks or vehicles and, in
addition, heavy helicopters on the landing platform. If used as cargo
carriers, they can embark 1,500 tons of material. Lifting equipment
includes two 35-ton cranes. Combat
systems:
A combined command center permits the simultaneous direction of
helicopter and amphibious operations. The SQS-17 sonar on L 9021 has
been removed, as have the ship’s former two 120-mm mortars. Both had
two Simbad light SAM launchers added in 1992 in place of two 40-mm
mounts. Now have Syracuse II SATCOM facilities, as well as an Inmarsat
transceiver. Plans to replace the remaining two 40-mm guns with 30-mm
OTOBreda-Mauser gunmounts have been canceled, but both have two SAGEM
DIBC-2A (VIGY 105) panoramic electro-optical weapons-control systems
as part of a reduced version of the OP3A/SENIT 8.01 self-defense
combat control system.

Nota: Otra oportunidad perdida.
